Post 12 Oratorical Contest winner

Post 12 Adjutant Dean Jarman presented Breeze Barber a check for $200 to congratulate her on her achievement as oratorical contest winner for the area.

A local student recently showed off her speaking skills in a contest held by the American Legion, and is moving onto the next level.

Rockmart High School sophomore Breeze Barber will be representing the American Legion Post 12 at the District level American Legion Oratorical Contest on Feb. 10 in Cartersville after she won the local contest during an event on Jan. 27.

Breeze researched and presented two speeches to members of the post.

The first was an 8 minute prepared oration covering the aspect of the United States Constitution and emphasized duties and obligations of citizens to the local, state and federal government.

The second was an extemporaneous 3 minute speech on 15th Amendment.

This annual oratorical competition is open to all high school students. Topics are posted in the fall to allow students to research the subjects in depth.

Scholarship awards are presented at each level as they move toward the National competition held in Indianapolis on April 14-15.
