The first meeting of the Polk Retired Educators Association (PREA) was kicked off by the new President, Andrea Sorrells, who discussed the plans for the new season.
She acknowledged the beautiful table decorations that portrayed the theme: "running with champions."
Emphasis was also placed on the importance of members becoming more active in community affairs, wherein supporters Marian Williams, Jaye Sawyer and Frances Gresley were mentioned as supporters of the Summer Program at Turner School in Cedartown.
The Association also welcomed newly retired teachers: Dondra Robinson, Sandra Floyd-McNally, and Jean Evans.
The main speaker was Joe Boland, Area XV Director in the GREA.
He was excited about the efforts that the PREA had exhibited throughout the years, even showing the highest enrollement of new members.
Boland noted the plans for the Rockmart Riverwalk fundraiser planned for Oct. 21, to benefit the Shriners, as just one example of outstanding involvement by the group.
He was concerned about the amount of money needed to pay new teacher benefits, which will be at risk in the future, especially those moving into new areas.
The next PREA meeting will be held on Oct. 5, 2017, at the Cherokee Country Club in Cedartown, with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and guest speaker Coach Joe Kines.
PREA encourages members to invite their spouses to join them for the meeting.
