A weekend on the road in Macon saw one local team get a good finish in the State Duals, and local middle school teams had a big weekend at FCA championships as well.

Jackets fans have reason to celebrate after they return from middle Georgia this week as placed in the consolation bracket for the 2018 Class AA state duals for teams.

Rockmart, lost to eventual Class AA runner-up Toombs County 49-21 last Friday before coming back over the weekend and getting a 36-30 win over Spencer to advance to the consolation finals where the Jackets fell to Fitzgerald 39-33 to take fourth place.

Jackets wrestling head coach Drew Lindsey said on a post on Facebook when announcing the win that he was proud of what the team had accomplished in a short span of time.

"A year ago this team finished fifth in the Area duals. This year, Area dual champions and fourth in the state," he said. "This is the first time since 2003 that the Rock has placed at State Duals."

Cedartown didn't make it to the State Duals this year after falling in the Area Duals as Central Carroll and Troup County went this year to compete for Region 5-AAAA. The Tigers ended up in fourth place, with Jefferson taking the State Duals championship and Gilmer the runner up.

Teams will now have two weeks to prepare for the area traditional tournaments the weekend of Jan. 26-27.

State sectional tournaments will take place a week later, followed by the GHSA traditional state wrestling tournament back in Macon Feb. 8-10.
