The Rockmart Yellow Jackets boys team took their shot in the state’s Sweet 16, but couldn’t overcome a strong Spencer team on the road.
Despite putting up a hard fight, the Jackets fell 72-39 to the Green Waves in the second round of the Class AA playoffs. It cut short a big season for the Jackets, who not only earned a second place finish in the region, but also got to host in the first round of the state playoffs.
Rockmart went 17-11 overall, 9-6 region 7-AA with a second place finish in area play, including a trip to the championship game against Chattooga, who was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round against Monticello.
The Jackets won their first round game over Putnam County by nine in a 52-43 win at home.
Now Rockmart will look to take a breather from the court and go back to work during summer camps with several Jackets returning several players for the coming year. A number of rising seniors, juniors and sophomores will be on hand for next year, with only Michael Gay and Robert Harris the only two seniors to say goodbye to the team this year.
Rockmart split against Cedartown in the 2017-18 season, taking a road win but lost to the Bulldogs at home.
