This past Friday, Van Wert Elementary got in an early celebration for Veterans Day and thanked those who have fought for our country with an honorary event which included a couple of surprises for servicemen.

The entire school assembled in the school’s lunchroom and presented a slide show, some gifts, and the students all came together to sing two songs honoring Polk County’s heroes.

This has been a special project that the music teacher Billy Walker. He worked with the whole school body to surprise veterans with some patriotic tunes.

Students came together from every grade to sing “God Bless the USA” and “God Bless America.”

The students have been practicing during their activity time working with Walker to get better over the past months, and it proved just perfect last week with the music teacher providing backup on piano.

Vice Principal Jessica Lanham, was astonished with the way Walker worked with the children and how well the outcome was; having family in the service herself, Lanham was moved by the performance.

“I would just like to say thank you very much to all the veterans out there.” said Lanham. “My brother is in the marines and I don’t get to see him much, so I get emotional because I know what they have sacrificed for us.”

This event was put together by the community board who then sent out invitations to come and send in pictures of family relatives who were veterans for the slide show to honor them.

The school also placed American flags out in the school grounds, an annual project to honor veterans.
