An upcoming blood drive at the Polk County Police Department is now being held in honor of Detective Kristen Hearne according to fellow office Andy Anderson, who is organizing the event.
Anderson said the department is partnering with Blood Assurance and Dr. Mark Wall for the upcoming blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
He said that following Det. Hearne's tragic death, the department felt the tribute was a way to honor her service.
"We believe Kristen would have really appreciated this," Anderson said. "It is just one way we felt we could give back right now."
He said the department is planning a fitting celebration of Det. Hearne's life as the event is coming to a close with a balloon release for those who donate. Anderson is encouraging people to give blood and take part, not just in Det. Hearne's memory.
Those who give blood will be eligible for a drawing for two winners for a $100 cash prize, Anderson said. Donations will get participants a raffle ticket. Prizes will be drawn at the end of the day.
Several gift cards were donated as well. Participants will also get a Bojangle's biscuit and a Blood Assurance t-shirt for giving a pint.
Additionally, the Polk County Police Department is selling t-shirts will be on sale at the department during the drive for those who wish to purchase and make a contribution to the trust fund being established for Det. Hearne's son, Isaac.
Those interested in participating or want to help in some way can contact Anderson or the secretaries at the Polk County Police Department by calling 770-748-7331.
