It wasn’t the trophy they wanted, but winning the third-place trophy is better than leaving the Holiday Festival empty handed.

The girls third-place game in the 60th Holiday Festival featured a matchup of Bartow County rivals, as Cartersville took on Woodland.

Led by their do-everything point guard Kaelyn Irby, the Cartersville Lady Purple Hurricanes downed their cross-county rivals 59-43 to claim third place.

“Obviously we were disappointed (to not be in the championship) but so was Woodland,” said Cartersville coach Cindy Moore. “Nobody wanted to be playing in the early game today, but when you are you have to try and get through that disappointment.

“I’m pleased with the win and to finish third in a good tournament like this is an accomplishment.”

Irby, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had a game-high 20 points for the Lady Canes, and Morgan Jones finished with 15 points.

The Lady Wildcats leading scorer was Katie Harris, who finished with 13.

Woodland led 12-10 at the end of the first, but Cartersville rallied in the second quarter, taking a 26-22 lead at the half.

The Lady Canes went on to outscore Woodland 33-21 in the second half.
