Holiday season kicks off during annual Christmas Open House festivities

On Sunday, Nov. 19, the community came out in droves for the annual Christmas Open House festivities in downtown Calhoun and throughout the community.

Local merchants offered huge savings throughout the day, holding giveaways and drawings for prizes and offering refreshment to the hundreds of people looking for a bargain as the holiday season officially kicked off in Gordon County.

The GEM Theatre showed Christmas classics on the big screen throughout the day and a live nativity was held in the evening hours.

The day culminated in the arrival of Santa Claus and the annual lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the Gordon County Courthouse.

Upcoming events are: Beginning Thursday, Dec. 14, and running through Saturday, Dec. 16, downtown Calhoun can enjoy Winter Wonderland, the community's very own ice skating rink. Hours on Thursday, Dec. 14 will be from 4 - 9 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 15 hours are 4 - 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 16, the rink will be open all day from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. The event is very affordable at $6 per person, which includes ice skate rental and 30 minutes of ice time, and the annual Christmas Parade of Lights will be held Thursday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
