During a family hiking trip Sunday to beautiful Dismals Canyon near Phil Campbell, Ala., I saw my first traditional "slugburger," the unique creation made popular in Mississippi.

The burgers are typically made from a mixture of pork and an "extender," such as soy flour, and deep fried. They are topped with chopped onions and mustard.

The café in the Dismals General Store, with its quaint soda fountain, offers up the unusual treats for $2.50, with a bag of chips.
