William Akins, 98, Ringgold

William Archie Akins of Ringgold died Wednesday, Dec. 14, at a local nursing home. He was 98.

A native of the Ringgold area, he lived in Pensacola, Fla., for 58 years and had lived in Ringgold for the past five years. He was a member of Boynton Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of the Naval Air Station in Pensacola.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Seigers Akins; parents, John and Nellie Gray Akins; brother, Reynold Akins; three sisters, Ellen Kettler, Bess Gappard, Myrtle Adair.

Survivors include one brother, Kenneth Gray Akins of Ringgold; several nieces and nephews.

Services: Friday, Dec. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Visitation: Thursday, Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at funeral home.

Ashley Boyd, 12, LaFayette

Ashley Deloris Boyd of LaFayette died Tuesday, Dec. 13, in a local hospital. She was 12.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was in the fifth grade at Naomi Elementary School. She was a very good singer.

Survivors include her adoptive parents, Patricia and William Price of LaFayette; biological father, William Boyd of Chattanooga, Tenn.; biological mother, Chegea Roach of Ringgold; sisters, Amber Boyd of LaFayette, Cynthia Broom of LaFayette, Breanna Roach of Ringgold; brother, Rikki Allerding of LaFayette; grandparents, Harold and Nancy Tweed of Chattanooga; boyfriend, Patrick Dollmont of Chattanooga; cousins, Felicia and Rebecca Stephens, Zach Phillips, all of Chattanooga; several aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Helen Louise Giles of East Ridge, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 14, in a local health care facility. She was 94.

Betty Gilbreath Hegwood of LaFayette died Wednesday, Dec. 14. She was 69.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Hegwood.

Jackie Dean Higgins of LaFayette died Monday, Dec. 12, at his home. He was 42.

Flora Blackwell, 75, Rossville

Flora Marie Raines Blackwell of Rossville died Tuesday, Dec. 13, at a local hospital. She was 75.

She was born March 26, 1930 in Chattanooga Valley on Bee Rock Road to the late Lee and Grace Robinson Raines. She was a member of Chattanooga Valley Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Carl “Carroll” Blackwell; daughter, Susan Blackwell; son, Paul Blackwell; twin brother, Floyd; brothers, Frank and Spud; sisters, Ina Lee Hickman, Bessie Christine.

Survivors include children, Larry Blackwell of Chickamauga, James Blackwell of Rossville, Belinda Blackwell of Hixson, Tenn., Mark Blackwell of Rossville; brothers, Raymond of Flintstone, Roy of Fyffe, Ala., Walter of Rossville; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Frank Junior Dillon of East Ridge, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 10. He was 51.

He had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith. He was also previously employed with Brach’s Candy Co. for more than 23 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Vera Dillon; sister, Shcarlyne Miyabara.

Margaret Boston Gaines of LaFayette died Monday, Dec. 12. She was 89.

James Russell Gee of Ringgold died Sunday at his home. He was 57.

He was a longtime resident of north Georgia, and was a mechanic at Cochran Home and Auto.

Eva Griffith, 84, Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.

Eva H. Griffith of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., a retired financial specialist for Lockheed-Martin, died Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Indian River Center. She was 84.

She was born in LaFayette. She came to Brevard County, Fla., in 1959 from Oak Ridge, Tenn. She was a lifetime member of the Missile and Space Pioneers Union.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Milliard of Indian Harbor Beach; a brother, Wallace Hampton of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, one great grandchild.

Theodore William Glad of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 12, at his residence. He was 66.

He was born in Lansing, Mich., to the late Thorsten Theodore and Marion McVay Glad. He was a previous resident of Ponte Vedra, Fla., before moving to the Chattanooga area. He was of Methodist faith. He had been employed by Shoney’s Restaurants in management at the St. Elmo, Rossville and Golden Gateway locations. He was a former employee of Chattanooga Foods/Fisheries and retired from Amerifoods.

Tony Alan Parris of Trion died Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Erlanger Medical Center. He was 48.

He was born Nov. 13, 1957 in Trion. He attended Teloga Baptist Church, graduated from Trion High School and was a member of the Northwest Georgia Bulldogs Club. He was employed at Chem-Tex Labs.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Chris Parris.

Mary Ruscio of Ringgold died Monday, Dec. 12, in a local health care facility. She was 88.

She had been a resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for more than 50 years. She was retired from Container Corp. with 30 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Foster; second husband, Marion Ruscio; eight brothers and sisters.

Kenneth Abney, 64, Ringgold

Kenneth “Ken” Julian Abney of Ringgold died Saturday, Dec. 10, at a local hospital. He was 64.

A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, he was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of Abney Tire and Lube for 32 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Abney Sr.; nephew, Andrew “Andy” Abney.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Crawford Abney of Ringgold; mother, Martha Elrod Abney of Ringgold; three children, Keith Abney of Atlanta, Alyce Sullivan of Ringgold, Paige McBryar of Atlanta; one brother, Raymond “Ray” Abney Jr. of Ringgold; two grandchildren, Megan Sullivan and Julian Ritchey, both of Ringgold; one nephew, Lee Abney of Orlando, Fla.

Farah Amjadi of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 11, at a local hospital. She was 58.

She was a native of Zanjan, Iran, and moved to Chattanooga 22 years ago.

She was preceded in death by her father, Abu Amjada.

Survivors include three sons, Ali John Taslimi, Eric Taslimi, Ali Reza Taslimi; one daughter, Rochelle Hall, all of Chattanooga; two grandchildren, Zoe and Sarah Taslimi; mother, Zarie Malook; other survivors in Iran, Babak, Ceyamack, Parveze, Fradune, Tata and Mimi Amjadi.

Hester “Nana” Elizabeth Cox Bean of Ringgold died Friday, Dec. 9, at her residence. She was 75.

A native of Palmer, Tenn., she had resided in the Ringgold area for the past 20 years and was of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Cox; sister, Gracie Lee Layne.

She was born in Louisville, Ky., to the late Samuel Houston and Ella Mae Pinkleton Bell. She retired from Gateway Hosiery Mill after 35 years of service and was a member of South Rossville Baptist Church.

Emily Faith Snyder Morlan, infant daughter of Robert Morlan and Tiffany Snyder of Trenton, died Friday, Dec. 9.

May Bell Longwith Crumley of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 5, at a local hospital. She was 76.

Carl Richard “Chuck” Blevins of Rossville died Friday, Dec. 2. He was 62.

He was born in Hamilton County, Tenn., and lived most of his life in Florida before moving back to north Georgia almost 10 years ago. He was also an Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Fannie Blevins; six brothers and two sisters.

Gordon Conner, 68, Tunnel Hill

Gordon “Sonny” Conner of Tunnel Hill died at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 30. He was 68.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Bible Way Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran with the 82nd Airborne Division, and retired from U.S. Pipe in 1995 after more than 31 years as a supervisor. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and playing guitar.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Conner; mother, Pauline Brock; sister, Barbara Jean McNabb; aunt, Rose Boyd.

Survivors include his wife of more than 45 years, Mary Conner of Tunnel Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Ann and Jim Harwood of Mexico Beach, Fla., Sonya Renee and Pete Petty of Chatsworth; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Shannon and Amy Sprague Conner of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; sister, Anna Sue Smith of Pikeville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Terry Boyd, 54, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Terry Boyd of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Wednesday, Nov. 30. He was 54.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and attended East Brainerd Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ruth and Ernest Boyd Jr.; brothers, Robert L. Boyd and Ronnie Boyd.

Barbara Waters, 48, Tunnel Hill

Barbara Sue Waters of Tunnel Hill died Tuesday, Nov. 29, at a local nursing home. She was 48.

A lifelong resident of the north Georgia and Chattanooga area, she was of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by her father, James Waters; sister, Carol Ann Phillips.

Survivors include her mother, Villa Mae Hughes Waters of LaFayette; one daughter, Jessica Lewallen of Adairsville; two sisters, Bernadine Holmes of Tunnel Hill, Doris Waters of LaFayette; one granddaughter, Brianna Lewallen of Adairsville; several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Reed, 83, East Brainerd, Tenn.

Gerald “Jerry” Reed of East Brainerd, Tenn., died Tuesday, Nov. 29. He was 83.

A native of Prattsburg, N.Y., he had been a resident of the Chattanooga area for the past 58 years. He was a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church and retired from Combustion Engineering with 30 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the South Pacific.

A son, Dennis Reed, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Louella Reed; three daughters, Jacqueline M. Frazier of Ider, Ala., Annette Harris of Ringgold, Shari Baughman of Harrison, Tenn.; one son, Steven Reed of Henagar, Ala.; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mainer Walker; brother, Kenneth Walker.
