According to a report from the National Council for Home Safety and Security, Calhoun has been identified as one of the Top 50 Safest Cities in Georgia for 2018. Calhoun came in at number 35 on the list.
The way safest cities are determined is by review of the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics from 2016, along with population data, according to the Council. Cities under 10,000 in population were not considered in the report. The cities who submitted a complete crime report to the FBI were then ranked based on the number of violent crimes, such as aggravated assault, murder and rape, that were reported and number of property crimes, such as burglary and arson, per 1,000 people in the city. Violent crimes were assigned a value 1.5 times property crimes.
According to the report, the City of Calhoun, with a population of 16,439, had 43 violent crimes and 639 property crimes, which equaled out to 2.62 per 1,000 people and 38.87 per people respectively.
"I'm very pleased with this recognition," said Calhoun Mayor Jimmy Palmer, giving accolades to the Calhoun Police Department for keeping the City safe. "The Calhoun Police Department was recognized recently with the Governor's Cup by the Office of Highway Safety and was also the Mountain Area Agency of the Year."
