Alabama Sports Writers Association

After finishing runner-up to the Hokes Bluff Eagles in the Class 4A, Area 12 baseball race last week, the Cherokee County Warriors dropped four spots to No. 8 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association baseball rankings. The latest rankings were released late Wednesday evening.

The Warriors (21-8), 10-2 winners at Fort Payne on Wednesday, open the state playoffs at Danville (19-11) on Friday, with a doubleheader scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday. A third game, if necessary, is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

In Class 3A, the Piedmont Bulldogs (19-10) holds steady at No. 7. The Bulldogs host New Hope (7-15) on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. If the series reaches a third game, it will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.

Three other baseball teams received consideration for the final rankings of the season, all in Class 1A.

Spring Garden (18-6), which was ranked ninth in last week's poll, fell out of the rankings this week. The Panthers are scheduled to host Vina (13-11) in their first-round playoff series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. A third game, if necessary, is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Cedar Bluff (15-12) is also hosting a first-round playoff series against Holy Spirit (12-5). Friday's doubleheader begins at 4:30 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Gaylesville (15-8) travels to South Lamar (19-8) for its best-of-three game series with a doubleheader on Friday at 4:30 p.m. If the teams split, a decisive third game is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
