Mrs. Esma Jean Schoonhoven, 81, of Piedmont passed away Friday, July 14, 2017 at UAB in Birmingham

Services for Mrs. Schoonhoven will be Monday, July 17, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with Mr. Greg Kirkland officiating. Burial will follow at Arrington Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 12 – 2 p.m..

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Jan Schoonhoven; two daughters, Brenda Mitchell (Joseph) of McDonough, Ga. and Kathy Cross (Randy) of Washington; one son, Jerome Schoonhoven (Edna) of Piedmont; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; five sisters, Dorothy Gail East, Diane Stephens, Linda Clark, Janet Grey, and Sharon Hottel; three brothers, Robert Lee Gordon, Jr., Steven Gordon, and Mark Gordon; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schoonhoven was a resident of Piedmont for 40+ years, was a member of the Jacksonville Church of Christ, was the owner of J&J Grocery for many years and worked the polls for the Cherokee County and state elections in Spring Garden. She was a simple person who enjoyed life and loved her dogs. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Doster; parents, Robert and Sarah Gordon; and her twin sister.
