Hugh Washington and Betty Washington are missing.

Update: An elderly Alabama couple who disappeared Wednesday after driving to Rome were found safe Thursday afternoon in Gaffney, South Carolina, said Floyd County police Sgt. Brandon Ekey.

Hugh Washington, 85, and his wife Betty Washington, 73, had lunch at Outback Steak­house in Rome on Wednes­day and then disappeared, Ekey said.

Facebook comments indicate they also visited a doctor in Rome Wednesday morning.

Washington suffers from dementia and his wife has health issues as well.

Ekey said shortly after the couple was found that he didn’t have any details about how they got to Gaffney, which is over 240 miles away from Rome.

He said their son was on the way to bring them home.

Update: A Cherokee County, Ala., couple who sparked a search by law enforcement across North Georgia has been found safe in Gaffney, South Carolina, according to Sgt. Brandon Ekey, with the Floyd County police.

Hugh Washington, 85, and his wife Betty Washington, 73, had lunch at Outback in Rome Wednesday and then disappeared, Ekey said.

He said Thursday afternoon the couple's son was headed to Gaffney to bring them home.
