CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jacksonville State's Eli Jenkins has earned a spot on the 2014 CFPA Quarterback Award Watch List, as announced by College Football Performance Awards recently.
"Congratulations to Eli Jenkins on earning a spot on this year's watch list," CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith said . "Last season, Jenkins contributed meaningfully to Jacksonville State's offense, which averaged 5.7 yards per play."
The initial watch list includes 36 returning performers, vying for the top quarterback award in the Football Championship Subdivision. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
Jenkins was instrumental in leading a Jacksonville State team to an 11-4 record a year ago as the Gamecocks posted two FCS Playoff wins before falling in the Quarterfinals at Eastern Washington. Jax State had the most prolific offense in school history as the Gamecocks set a total of 49 school records, 13 Ohio Valley Conference records and three NCAA records.
A quick-strike attack that scored 24 times on drives of less than one minute, the Jax State offense amassed 6,637 yards of total offense, 1,755 yards more than any team in school history, and racked up 528 points, 107 more than the previous record set in 1991. JSU's 65 touchdowns were a new school record, while its school record 48 rushing touchdowns also broke the OVC mark.
Jenkins earned freshman All-American honors after throwing for 887 yards and running for 953 more, while finishing second on the team with 11 touchdowns in 2013.
The goal of College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Twenty-eight CFPA winners have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
Last season, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston earned the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy for the FBS, while Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams earned the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy.
CFPA Trophy winner and former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was the first overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The full list of 2014 CFPA winners will be announced January 14, 2015.
