The wildfire on Strawberry Mountain in Walker County is 95 percent under control and the U.S. Forest Service remains on site to monitor hot spots and leaf droppage.

According to U.S. Forest Service District Fire Management Officer Jeff Schardt, the firefighters will continue to monitor the fire activity, while maintaining a presence at the site, to watch for hot spots flaring up as well as the dead leaves falling from the trees and rekindling the fire.

Firefighters were dispatched to Strawberry Mountain on Manning Mill Creek about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Georgia Forestry Commission was on hand as well until pulled from the fire to attend other fires in the state.

The wildfire has burned nearly 500 acres, with 225 acres being on U.S. Forest Service land.
