Northwest Georgia’s unemployment rate declines to 7.2 percent in November

The unemployment rate in the northwest Georgia region decreased to 7.2 percent in November, down seven-tenths of a percentage point from 7.9 percent in October. The rate was 8.4 percent in November a year ago.

The rate declined in November because the number of unemployed people in the northwest Georgia region decreased by 2,802, which is a significant improvement. There were 29,059 unemployed residents, down from 31,861 in October. There were 34,699 unemployed residents in the northwest Georgia region in November 2012.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 10 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November was 7.7 percent, down from 8.1 percent in October. The rate was 8.7 percent in November a year ago.

Investigation into allegations of sexual assault results in two arrested, charged with rape

According to Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston, on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, deputy sheriffs received a report of an alleged sexual assault involving two assailants against a female under the age of eighteen. Sheriff’s detectives initiated an investigation into the matter that same day.  They conducted a number of interviews with witnesses as well as obtained certain physical evidence. The alleged assault is believed to have taken place on Feb. 4/5 at a third party residence near Calhoun.
