There's a new face filling an old position at the LaFayette Recreation Center.

Steve Roberts comes with a lot of experience, said LaFayette Parks and Recreations Director Jason Shattuck.

"Steve Roberts is the recent addition to the LaFayette Parks and Recreation team. He comes from Dalton Parks and Recreation where he spent sixteen years in numerous roles. He started his career in adult athletics and moved into youth athletics after his first year," Shattuck said.

Roberts was brought onto the recreation team during the summer.

City Manager David Hamilton said the position is not a new one for the city, but one that has been vacant since the last Parks & Recreations director was released over a year ago.

Hamilton said the position remained vacant until Shattuck found a qualified replacement who can add new responsibilities to the role.

Roberts was the youth athletic coordinator in Dalton for 12 years.

He concluded his career at Dalton Recreation Center as superintendent of athletics and programming.

Roberts has been an active member of GRPA at the local level and as well at the state level, Shattuck said.

Currently, Roberts is serving as the District 5 athletic chairman on the GRPA State Athletic Committee. The GRPA State Athletic Committee is the governing body for all GRPA athletics.

"This is his fourth term on this committee. He has been a member of GRPA since 2001," Shattuck said.

Roberts is also a CPRP-certified Parks and Recreation professional from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).

Roberts graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Education in Recreation Administration.

Roberts played college football and was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, where he earned ALL-SEC honors his senior year.

Roberts' wife Amy has been a teacher in Dalton for the past 23 years.

The couples son, Jake Roberts, is a football player at Kennesaw State University and their daughter, Carson Roberts, plays golf at the University of North Georgia, Shattuck said.
