Wrestling in the Class 1A state tournament got going Friday morning in Macon and Gordon Lee went 4-1 in the first round.
Hunter Burnette (106 pounds) moved to 32-6 on the year with a pin. The sophomore will face Strong Rock Christian sophomore Trevor Broome (31-1) in the semifinals later today.
Senior Jarrett Lassetter (160) also won by pin as he improved to 35-5 this season. He will square off with Commerce senior Chase Forrester (31-2) in the semifinals.
Braden Jarvis (170) kept his chances for an undefeated senior year intact with a 15-5 win Friday morning. Jarvis (40-0) will take on Wesleyan senior George Bielan (34-7) later today.
The final win came from senior Caleb Vines (220) who needed all of 20 seconds to record a pin in his first match. Vines will go up against Irwin County’s D.J. Lundy in the semis. Lundy, a sophomore, is also unbeaten this year at 26-0.
In the Class 3A tournament, Ringgold was 2-1 in the first round.
Holden Moss (132) scored a pin in 55 seconds to advance to the semifinals of the eight-man bracket. The junior (38-8) will face McNair’s Antonio Mills (6-1) in his next match.
Griffin Green (145) continued his drive for a second state championship with second period pin. Now 40-2 on the year, the senior will take on Westminster senior Jack Polhemus (44-7) in the semifinals.
Malachi Parker (170) lost by pin in his first match and dropped to the consolation bracket.
LFO heavyweight Kameron Peters (29-3) scored a 2-1 decision in his first match and will face off with Bremen senior Paul Robinson (8-0) in the semifinals.
Jacob Brown had qualified for the Warriors at 152, but was not listed in the brackets for state.
The first match between local wrestlers took place in Class 4A this morning in the consolation bracket at 160 pounds. Heritage senior Spencer Davies (59-13) scored a third period pin over Ridgeland junior Dylan Swanson (26-16) in an elimination match. Davies is now just one win away from earning a medal (top six finish).
Also one win away from the medal round is Heritage 138-pounder Garret Stephens, who earned a technical fall in his first match on Friday. However, Alex Eacret (170) was eliminated after getting pinned earlier today.
The semifinals in all classifications will take place later this afternoon.
In the team standings, Gordon Lee is currently fifth in Class 1A with 27 points. Commerce leads with 69.5 points, followed by Darlington (39.5), while Trion and Mt. Pisgah are tied for third with 34 points.
Area 3 is flexing its muscle in the Class 3A standings. Sonoraville (44) and Bremen (35) are currently the top two teams, while Adairsville (19) is tied for fifth. Coahulla Creek is eighth, Ringgold is ninth, Calhoun is tied for 10th, Haralson County is tied for 14th and LFO is tied for 22nd.
And in Class 4A, Jefferson currently leads with 102.5 points with West Laurens (85), Troup (68.5), Woodward Academy (63) and Gilmer (61.5) rounding out the top five. Ridgeland (37.5) is tied for ninth, Heritage (25.5) is 12th and LaFayette (22) is 16th.
