The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans are on the cusp of an eighth fast pitch state championship.
The Navy-and-White spotted Region 6 rival Mt. Zion a run in the top of the fourth before coming back to beat the Lady Eagles, 5-1, in the winners' bracket final of the Class A Public School tournament in Columbus on Friday night.
Scoreless through three innings, sophomore Emily Phillips touched up Gordon Lee senior pitcher Canaan Burnett for a solo homerun to give Mt. Zion a 1-0 lead.
But Gordon Lee would answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. They tacked on another run in the fifth and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to secure the victory.
Burnett allowed just five hits and one walk to pick up the victory.
Gordon Lee (32-3) managed just six hits, but took advantage of four Mt. Zion errors. Gracey Kruse hit another homer and finished 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Faith Alexander, Paxton Grimes, Emma Minghini and Katherine Grace McElhaney each had a hit, while Alexander and McElhaney both drove in a run.
As of press time, the Lady Trojans were awaiting the winner of the elimination bracket final between Mt. Zion and Trion in a battle of Region 6 teams. Trion advanced with a 12-6 win over Georgia Military College Prep, knocking last year's state runner-up out of the tournament.
The championship games for all classes were moved up to 9 a.m. due to rain being in the forecast for tomorrow. A second title game, if needed, would immediately follow.
The GHSA has announced that if the championship games are rained out on Saturday, the teams who won the winners' bracket finals would host the championship final. That means Gordon Lee could host the state final at home on Monday. The game would begin at 5 p.m. with a second game, if needed, to immediately follow.
