The LaFayette Ramblers JROTC Rifle Team will be the No. 1 seed from Area 10 in the GHSA state playoffs after winning the area title at Cass High School on Friday night.
LaFayette finished with a season-high 1,147 points (out of 1,200) and 54 center hits on the targets. Cherokee (1,131-49) was second, followed by Dalton (1,116-47), Ridgeland (1,071-32), Etowah (984-17), Sonoraville (858-9) and Gordon Central (819-10).
Their first round opponent will be decided this week and their first match in the state playoffs will be March 31.
LaFayette (12-0) had Area 10's top shooter in Emma Sargeant (294 out of 300), the area's only state qualifier. Sargeant also had the top average score in the area at 289.45 and had the best average among all Area 10 shooters in the standing and kneeling positions.
Andrew Carroll had the top average in the prone position and had the highest individual (prone) score with a perfect 100, while Alyssa Kiser won the Individual High Kneeling award with a perfect 100 of her own.
Sargeant and Kiser were named to the All-Area "A" Team, while Steve Thompson and Logan Massingill earned seats on the All Area "B" Team.
