The LaFayette Middle School Ramblers secured an NGAC playoff berth and ended the post-season dreams of the Heritage Generals with a 26-8 home victory on Thursday.
LaFayette (4-1) will travel to Ringgold next Thursday to battle the Tigers for the East Division title.
Heritage held the ball the entire first quarter, methodically driving the field and scoring two plays in the second quarter to take an 8-0 lead.
But a 29-yard fourth-down pass from Zach Cowen to Chase Keith set up a 1-yard Jeffery Watkins plunge. The conversion attempt failed and the Ramblers went into intermission down 8-6.
It would take less than a minute into the second half for LaFayette to take the lead for good.
Watkins scampered 60 yards for a score just 40 seconds into the third quarter. The conversion attempt failed, but the Ramblers had a 12-6 lead. Heritage countered by driving to the LaFayette 30-yard line, but a high snap resulted in a fumble recovery by Rambler defensive end Landon Swanson, getting the ball back for his team.
With 5:11 left to play, Watkins got loose for a 65-yard touchdown run, and after one more defensive stop, Watkins capped a final LaFayette drive with a 15-yard scoring jaunt and subsequent 2-point conversion to put the game on ice.
Watkins ran 13 times for 206 yards and scored four times, while also collecting six tackles on defense. Cowan paced the Ramblers with nine stops, while Javionne Dennis added seven tackles.
