The Heritage Lady Generals got a stiff challenge in the second half on Tuesday, but weathered a couple of runs by the Notre Dame Lady Irish to pick up a 51-45 victory on the opening night of the Ridgeland Thanksgiving Tournament.
Heritage took a six-point lead after one quarter and stretched it out to 28-15 at intermission. Notre Dame, however, would go on a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the third quarter to make it a one-possession game at 32-30.
But Emily Wiley would immediately answer with a 3-pointer and she and Ariana Camp would each hit one more trey by the end of the period to push the lead back to 12.
The Lady Generals would extend their advantage to 14 points early in the fourth quarter before Notre Dame made one final run. A 12-5 spurt cut the deficit down to 48-43 with 3:15 to play.
However, the Heritage defense would answer the call and clamped down in the final 180 seconds. Wiley would drain her third 3-pointer of the game with just under a minute to play to ice the win.
She would finish with three 3-pointers and 22 total points. Camp hit a pair of threes and had 12 points in her Heritage debut, while Ansley Bice also connected on two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.
Heritage (1-0) will take on the Lady Eagles of Signal Mountain at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday and they will conclude the tournament on Friday with a 5:30 game against North Murray.
