The Gordon Lee Lady Trojans began Wednesday sitting in 20th place in the GHSA Class 1A Public School state basketball power rankings with only the top 24 teams earning invites to the state tournament.
By rule, however, region champions get automatic bids and the Navy-and-White are suddenly just two wins away from not even having to worry about their power ranking numbers.
Gordon Lee took another step closer to automatic bid status with a 45-38 win over Fellowship Christian in a Region 6-A tournament quarterfinal match-up at the Walker School in Marietta on Wednesday.
The victory was a measure of revenge for the Lady Trojans, who lost a heartbreaking 39-38 decision to the Lady Paladins in the opening round of the region tournament exactly one year ago.
Gordon Lee (15-10) led wire-to-wire, though FCS battled back to turn a 21-14 halftime deficit into a 29-27 contest with just one period left to play.
Faith Alexander connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points in the victory. Gracie O'Neal had 12 points and Abby Dalton added 11 points with a pair of threes. Kaitlyn O'Toole stepped up with eight points, six coming in the second half.
Cameron Schwartz hit three 3-pointers and had a game-high 25 points for FCS.
The Lady Trojans will play in the semifinals at 3 p.m. on Friday against Bowdon, a 46-44 winner over Mt. Paran Christian. That game will be held at St. Francis in Atlanta.
