The Ringgold Tigers, who trailed 7-0 at halftime and 7-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, scored with 2:25 to play in the final period to send their game with North Murray into overtime, but eventually suffered a crushing 21-20 loss in a Friday night, subregion clash in Chatsworth.
Tied 13-13 as the extra period began, Joey Collins got free on a 15-yard TD run on the very first play with Garrett Davis providing the extra point that put Ringgold in front for the first time all night.
However, the Mountaineers (4-3 overall, 2-0 in 6-AAA North) would answer the touchdown with one of their own on a 9-yard run by Dante Tidwell before head coach Preston Poag sent out his offense for the 2-point conversion try, attempting to win the game without going to a second OT period.
Following a Ringgold timeout, Poag would call Tidwell's number again and the freshman came through, using a second effort to get the ball in the endzone for the winning points. His overtime heroics capped a big night for the Mountaineer rookie, who rushed for 184 yards and all three North Murray scores.
Ringgold (4-4, 1-2) couldn't connect on a 26-yard field goal late in the first half and a 20-yard kick early in the third quarter was blocked by North Murray, temporarily keeping the Tigers scoreless.
A 60-yard catch and run by Andre Tarver later in the third finally broke the scoring drought, but a missed PAT still kept the Tigers down by a point. Tidwell had the answer minutes later after getting loose on a 70-yard scamper, but the Mountaineers would also miss on an extra point, keeping the margin at 13-6.
But with less than three minutes remaining, the Tigers got a 17-yard TD pass from Cole Kibler to tight end Drake Starks and the extra point was true, tying the game and forcing overtime.
Individual statistics were not available as of press time.
Ringgold will be off next Friday, while North Murray will travel to Coahulla Creek.
