The Ridgeland Panthers led by just two points at halftime, but took control in the second half to beat Gilmer, 64-48, in the Region 6-AAAA opener Tuesday night in Rossville.
Ridgeland (2-1, 1-0) carried a slim 27-25 lead into the locker room, but held the Bobcats to just nine points in the third, while scoring 17 points of their own to give themselves some breathing room.
Markeith Montgomery had a team-high 24 points in the victory. Fred Norman went for 15, followed by Christian Battle with eight. Eric Byrd and Jordan Tucker finished with six each. Ridgeland also helped itself by going 9-of-11 at the free throw line.
Kell Weaver had 14 points for Gilmer.
In the girls' game, the Lady Panthers endured another narrow loss as they fell by a count of 46-45.
Fran King had 14 points for Ridgeland (0-3, 0-1), followed by Brylee Dunn with 10 and Haley Sandridge with eight.
Ridgeland will go on the road for the first time this season on Friday with a pair of games at Southeast Whitfield.
