Georgia Northwestern Bobcats

Time and time again in the second half on Tuesday, the visiting Covenant College junior varsity team tried their best climb back into the game and time and time again, the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats refused to let it happen.

But when the Scots had enough of knocking at the door, they decided to try and kick it in. And that was something the Bobcats simply had no answer for.

A 3-pointer by Ryan Rhodes with 7:57 would ultimately be the straw that broke the camel's back and the Scots would never trail again as they handed the Bobcats a 76-64 defeat at the Rossville Athletic Center.

Georgia Northwestern (3-15) would rally late in the opening half to take a 34-30 lead into intermission and the home team would keep the pressure on as the second half began.

Three different times, the Bobcats would push their advantage to eight points, the final time at 51-43 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Covenant would continue to peck away at the Bobcats' lead, whittling it down to as little as 53-50 when Tyler Phillips buried a 3-pointer from the wing to push the advantage back out to six as the clock ticked under 10 minutes remaining.

The Scots, however, kept up the pace. After shooting just 33 percent from the field in the first half, they knocked down shots at a 46 percent clip in the second half (16-of-35), while the Bobcats went just 10-of-36 (28 percent) in the final 20 minutes after shooting 41 percent in the first half.

Rhodes' three from the top of the key seemed to take the wind out the Bobcats' sails and the Scots' bench would make sure that their would be no final rally by the hosts. Covenant, who had six more players on its bench than the Bobcats did, saw its reserves outscore Georgia Northwestern, 40-18, as Tony Pulice dropped in 18 off the bench to lead all scorers.

Amos Corbett had 16 for the Scots (5-4), followed by Caleb Max with nine.

Phillips had another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Jay Wideman added 15 points and Daniel Parrish came off the bench to score 12 and dish out five assists. Cole McKeehan got the start and added eight points, including a pair of threes.

The Bobcats will back on the road this Thursday for a game against the Hiwassee College JV team in Madisonville, Tenn. before coming home on Saturday for their annual Pink Game doubleheader.

Florida College will be the opponent for both the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats. The women will tip off the action at 12 noon.
