The Gordon Lee Trojans took over sole possession of first place in the Region 6-A North standings with a 6-1 victory over North Cobb Christian Monday evening at the Lakepoint Complex in Cartersville.
No. 2-ranked Gordon Lee (7-2 overall, 3-0 subregion) pushed home a run in the top of the first as Hunter Hodson drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a passed ball. However, the Eagles (9-2, 2-1) knotted things up as they scratched home a run in the bottom of the fifth.
But it wouldn't stay tied for long as Gordon Lee regained the lead a half-inning later. Hodson began the inning with a single and was bunted to second by Justin Wooden. Dylan Minghini would single home a run and Caleb Hopkins would add an RBI on a groundout later in the frame.
The Trojans would put it away with a three-run seventh inning. J.D. singled and scored on a McCain Barbee triple. Then, following two walks and a strikeout, Wooden came through with a two-run single to tack on the insurance.
Mason Pettigrew limited to Eagles to just one earned run on one hit and two walks. He finished with eight strikeouts in six innings' worth of work. Jake Poindexter continued his strong rookie season by striking out two and walking one in one inning of relief.
North Cobb Christian pitcher Zach Turner, who is drawing interest from several Division I programs, gave up four runs - three earned - on five hits and two walks. He finished with 11 strikeouts in six innings, but was saddled with the loss.
Hodson and Minghini paced the Gordon Lee offense with two hits each.
The two teams will meet again in Chickamauga this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in a makeup date of a game that was rained out this past Saturday.
