The LFO Warriors used three big innings to pick up a 13-3 victory over Ridgeland in the first game of the 2018 Catoosa County Children's Fund Baseball Classic at AT&T Field in Chattanooga on Saturday.
LFO (5-2) picked up its first four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
After Jarrett McAfee singled and Joseph Heinrich reached on an error following a sacrifice bunt, Giovanni Barroso was intentionally walked to load the bases for Andrew Brock. The senior delivered a three-base knock to put the Warriors in front. Brock would later score on an RBI-groundout by Jake Bass.
LFO added six runs in the bottom of the fourth, thanks in part to two costly errors by the Panthers. One of the errors allowed Brock to circle the bases after he initially drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to left.
Ridgeland (1-1) would get all three of its runs and all five of its hits in the top of the fifth inning. Jacob Stephens led off with a double, followed by an RBI-single from Shawn Wilson. D.J. Ball had a single to put runners on the corners and Wilson scored on an errant throw following a pickoff attempt.
Later in the inning, Dylan Wooten added an RBI-double to score Ball from second. Tanner Hill delivered a single to put runners on the corners, but LFO starter Zach Coots got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The big inning temporarily staved off the run rule, but the Warriors would take care of business in the bottom of the fifth. They plated three runs, the last two coming on back-to-back walks issued with the bases loaded, to go up by 10 and end the game.
Brock had three hits, two runs and five RBIs, while McAfee also had three hits. Bass finished with two RBIs, as did Bryce Donnahoo. Jackson Herrod had one RBI.
Coots got the win, pitching five innings of five-hit ball with one walk and one strikeout. Ellis Johnson took the loss for Ridgeland (1-1).
LFO is scheduled to make up its game at LaFayette on Monday at 5:30 p.m., while Ridgeland is slated to begin Region 6-AAAA play at home on Tuesday against Heritage. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30.
