The Heritage Generals put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning to give themselves a cushion that they used to defeat Gordon Lee, 8-2, in the final game of the Catoosa County Children's Fund Baseball Classic at AT&T Field on Saturday.
Heritage scored three times in the bottom of the first inning on two hits and two Gordon Lee errors.
The Trojans came right back in the top of the second. Caleb Hopkins had a double, which was followed by an RBI-double off the bat of Austin Thompson. McCain Barbee later added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.
But the Generals would give themselves some breathing room a half-inning later, thanks to some two-out magic. Josh Gibson plated two runs on a two-run, two out single. Brody Campbell followed with an RBI-double and Blake Bryan had an RBI-single before Gordon Lee was finally able to record the third out.
The Trojans would give up one final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Bryan, Luke Grant and starting pitcher Johnathan Hickman all had two hits for Heritage, while Hickman also had an RBI.
Hickman recorded the win on the mound with five strong innings of work. Justin Morris threw the last two innings of relief for the Generals.
Hunter Hudson had the other hit for Gordon Lee, while Mason Pettigrew suffered the loss.
Heritage (3-5) will open region play on Tuesday with a game at Ridgeland, starting at 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile Gordon Lee (4-2) will also begin its region schedule on Tuesday with a home game against Bowdon. First pitch is also slated for 5:30.
