Ruth "Granny" Byrum Thompson, 97

Ruth Byrum Thompson "Granny", 97, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018.

She was born in Philadelphia, TN but resided most of her life in Chattanooga. Ruth was employed by Peerless Woolen Mills and Tri-County Nursing Home. She always had a passion for working hard, whether it was tending to flower gardens or building a house, Ruth was never one to sit on the sideline. As long as her health allowed, she always kept busy with things dear to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Thompson; son, Billy Robert Thompson; daughter, Shirley Horner; grandson, Frank Horner, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Jackie Thompson; and son-in-law, Frank Horner, Sr.

Survivors include her son, Buck Thompson; grandchildren, Leigh (Jonathan) Speal, Amber (Rob) Brock, Whitney (Mike) Arnold, Andy Thompson, Donna (Tommy) Head, and Deborah (Carl) Deal; thirteen great grandchildren; fifteen great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Tuesday, February 13th at 12:00p.m. in the South Crest Chapel.

Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Viola Mae Borders, 84, Henagar, Ala.

Viola Mae Borders, 84, of Henagar, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in a local hospital.

She was born May 9, 1933 in Shelby, Indiana to the late Nelson & Cora Griggs and had spent the past 40 years in the Chattanooga/north Georgia area.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Joseph Allen Rines and Daniel Kevin Rines and seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her children, Debra (Anthony) Martin, Hogansville, GA, Michael (Linda) Rines, Kouts, IN, Janice (Terry) Romine, Sullivan, IL, Rodney (Laurie) Rines, Pisgah, AL, and Karen (Wayne) Waldon, Rossville, GA; twenty-three grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services: Thursday, February 15th at 3:00 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Rev. Fred Santana officiating.

Mary "Slugger" Evelyn Dugger Massey age 81, of LaFayette, GA went home to be with The Lord Tuesday - February 6, 2018.

She was born in Chattanooga, TN to the late William Alonso Dugger, Sr., and Ellena Louise Lieker Dugger Pettigrew. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in LaFayette, GA.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her step-father: Luke Edward Pettigrew and brother: William A. Dugger, Jr.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years: Terry Dean Massey of LaFayette, GA, daughter: Jennifer Lynn Massey of San Francisco, CA, son: Christopher Dean (Melissa) Massey of Dallas, TX, sister: Donna Margio of West Jefferson, NC, grandchildren: Taylor J. Massey and Addyson Massey of Dallas, TX, first cousins: Celia Brock of Rome, GA and Joyce Lee of Ringgold, GA, caregivers: Margaret Stephenson and Rosie Hagwood, several nieces and nephews, and numerous more cousins.

Visitation: Saturday from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at Second Baptist Church, LaFayette at 2:00 pm – Sunday, February 11, 2018 with Pastor Mike Peterson officiating.

Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery.
