Larry "Buddy" Wayne Hughes, 74, Rock Spring, Ga.

Larry "Buddy" Wayne Hughes, age 74, of Rock Spring passed away Thursday, January 04, 2018.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in many roles during his service. He was over the mess hall where he earned many awards and where his enjoyment of cooking could be seen. He earned his Marksmanship Badge while stationed at Fort Riley and achieved the rank of sergeant in less than a year and earned his Associates Degree in Business. After his military achievements, he moved back to LaFayette and worked as a supervisor over the Dye House at E.T. Barwick Mills until its closing. He then worked many years as a supervisor at Crest Finishers in Chickamauga and then worked for Salem Carpet Mills in Dalton where he oversaw the Dye House. He spent his last 25 plus working years at Mount Vernon Mills where he started out as a shift leader over the Dye House and then retired as a driver in transportation. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church where he was active working with the children and senior citizens. He was fondly known by the church kids as the "Candy Man". He also enjoyed helping with the cooking for the church and oversaw the church Labor Day community festivities "Cooking in the Ground" feeding in excess of 300 people. He was a member of the Masonic Trion Lodge #160 and a member of the Scottish Rite.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus Hughes and Dora Watts Hughes; sisters, Charlene Stoker, Linda Gilley, and Kathy Hughes; and brother, Rickey Hughes.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Wilma Tucker Hughes of Rock Spring; daughters, Cindy Hughes Ashley (Jeff) of Rock Spring and Lecia Gilley Guthrie (Jeff) of LaFayette; son, Larry "Bear" Hughes of Rock Spring; grandchildren, Allison Ashley and Raelynn Hughes; brothers, Terry (Cindy) Hughes of Rock Spring and Tony (Cheryl) Hughes of LaFayette; several nieces and nephews; and special friends of 50 plus years, Marshall and Pauline Dooley.

A heartfelt and special thanks goes to Tapestry Hospice and In Good Health for their love, care and support which allowed him to be home with his family till his death.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor David Brown officiating.

Pallbearers: Jeff Ashley, Jeff Guthrie, Blake Guthrie, Zane Smith, Ben Tucker, and Larry Tucker.

Honorary pallbearers: Marshall Dooley, Terry Hughes, and Joseph Guthrie.

Visitation: 11 – 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

William "Bill" Franklin Christol, 97, LaFayette, Ga.

William "Bill" Franklin Christol, age 97, of LaFayette passed away Friday, January 05, 2018.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Osage from 1944 to 1946. He retired as a boilermaker from Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga. After retirement, Bill worked various jobs and worked for Hammond-Jones Hardware until the age 89. He pastored for 50 plus years and was well known and respected in the local community. Bill had a love for fishing and gardening and was known for his gentleness and strong work ethic and he never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Christol; his second wife, Mae Lipham; daughter, Gail Young; sisters, Thelma Maples and Lottie Little; and brother, Jack Christol.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Fuquea of Chattanooga Valley and Lynn Jessie of Rock Cave, WV.; grandchildren, Marcia (Mike) Morris, Bryan (Karen) Fuquea, Kyle (Sonya) Fuquea, Christol O’Neal, Lori (Frank) Carr, Ben Chapman, Amanda (Nathan) Barker, and Cortney Cash; 14 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: 2 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2018 in the Wilbanks Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating.

Interment: LaFayette City Cemetery.

John Dwight Carroll, 61, LaFayette, Ga.

John Dwight Carroll, age 61, LaFayette passed away Friday, January 5, 2018.

He worked for D & J Salvage for many years and was a contractor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Daniel Carroll and Mabel Copeland Carroll; brothers, Wade Carroll, Marvin Carroll, and Keith Carroll; and sister, Vicki Carroll.

He is survived by his son, Phillip Carroll of LaFayette; grandson, Matthew Carroll; sisters, Ann (Junior) Snyder, Connie (Ted) Lawson, and Pat Cook all of LaFayette; brother, Stanley (Tammy) Carroll of Rock Spring; and several nieces and nephews.

Johnnie Marie Haney Butler, age 65, of LaFayette passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Butler; daughters, Margie (David) McCormick and Jolene (Anthony) Tomaselli both of LaFayette and Jessica (David) Rosas of Dalton; sons, Donnie (Wendy) Butler of Ohio and Corey (LeeAnn) Butler of Dalton; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; sisters, Sue Johnston of Rydal, Ga., Myrtle (Hugh) Dayton of Marietta, Jerrie (Mike) Edwards of Calhoun, and Jan (Sammy) Wade of Cartersville; brother, Cecil Haney of Cartersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Raymond Paul "Pappy" Long Jr., age 82, of LaFayette passed away Monday, January 8, 2018. He was a car dealer for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Jo Long; son, Greg Long; parents, Raymond Paul Long Sr., and Rosa Mitchell Long; brothers, Billy Long and Jerry Long; and sister, Pauline Wallin.

He is survived by his love and companion, Linda Brown of LaFayette; son, Jeff Long of LaFayette; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Frances Cordell and Vicky Wallace both of LaFayette; brother, Wayne Long of Chickamauga; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Joe Hammontree, age 75, of the West Armuchee Community passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018.

He was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hayes Hammontree and Mary Lou Robinson Hammontree; brother, Don Hammontree; sisters, Reva Rex and Mary Ellen Hammontree.

He is survived by his brothers, Henry Hammontree of Gainesville, Ga., and Rex (Mary Nell) Hammontree of Rocky Face; several nieces and nephews.

Emma "Trudy" Williams Carroll, age 87, of LaFayette passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Day and Desiree Scott both of LaFayette; sons, Dwight (Angie) Carroll Jr., and Steve (Sue) Carroll both of Cedar Bluff, Ala., and Rodney (Karen) Carroll of Flintstone; several grandchildren, several great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; sisters, Leola Colbert and Jeanette Wilbanks both of Ringgold; brother, Gene Williams of Dutton, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.

Robert L. "Bob" McKay, 71, Rossville, Ga.

Robert L. "Bob" McKay, 71, of Rossville, the Dewberry Community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 with his family by his side.

Bob was a native and lifelong resident of North Georgia having graduated from Rossville High School class of 1964. He received his degree in Engineering from E.T.S.U. and retired from Chattanooga Paper Board with 41 years of service. Bob was a dedicated member and deacon at Fairview Baptist Church and, at the time of his passing, served as an ambassador at Lane Funeral Home-South Crest Chapel. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed playing golf, farming, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Earl & Mamie Ruth McKay, and brother, Thomas McKay.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Frankie McDonald McKay; his son and daughter-in-law, Luke & Lisa McKay of Ider, AL; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Beth & T.J. Newsom of Rock Spring, GA; grandchildren, Sawyer, Elijah, Samuel, & Sydney McKay, and Matthew & Micah Newsom; sister, Faye Brotherton; sister-in-law, Jeanette McKay; niece, Anita Kay Brotherton; nephews, Jonathan & Joseph McKay.

Funeral services: Saturday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Bennett officiating.

Interment: Lakewood Memory Gardens, South with his grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Daisy Aileen Phillips Oliver, 97, Chickamauga, Ga.

Daisy Aileen Phillips Oliver age 97, of Chickamauga, Georgia passed away Thursday – January 11, 2018.

She was born in Walker County to the late Herman and Irene McAlister Pitman on December 13, 1920. She attended school at Chattanooga Valley and was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga Valley community. She had unwavering faith in God and was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church. For decades Aileen was a Sunday School teacher, choir member and was very active in all aspects of her church and community. She sang in a trio for many years and she was also a member of the Chattanooga Valley Community Choir. After she became home bound, she hosted a Bible study in her home monthly for the High Point community. Music was a very important to Aileen and she was an inspiration to many over the years. Aileen worked as a florist for many years, a para pro in the school system for several years and also worked at Cutter Laboratory. She had a love for flowers and was proud of having over one hundred varieties of lilies. Many times, people would stop on the road to see her beautiful flowers in her yard. She was a loving person and gave of her time to several people over the years by taking care of them during their declining years until their death. She had many tragedies in her life, but never wavered in her faith in God to see her through.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands: Grover Phillips, Chester Oliver, sons: Floyd Phillips, James (Jimmy) Phillips, great-grandson: Heath Phillips.

She is survived by her sons: John Phillips of Flintstone, GA, Donald Oliver of Kensington, GA, daughter: Barbara Oliver Autry of High Point, GA, brother: Herman Pitman, Jr., of Flintstone, GA, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Saturday from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Sunday from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm and Monday morning prior to the service.

Funeral services: 2:00 pm – Monday – January 15, 2018 in the chapel with Pastor: Terry Burns officiating.

Burial: Lookout Cemetery.
