An elderly Fort Oglethorpe woman was arrested on obstruction and simple battery charges following an incident with her husband, in which she allegedly struck him while intoxicated and then disappeared into the nearby woods.
According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:
Edna Sue Turner, 67, of Clearbrook Court in Fort Oglethorpe was arrested on Dec. 24 on charges of obstruction of officers and simple battery.
Turner was subsequently released from jail on her own recognizance approximately nine hours later, jail records show.
Officers were dispatched to the Turner residence in the Fountain Brook apartment complex around 11:20 p.m. on Dec. 23 regarding a possible domestic dispute.
Officers spoke with Turner’s husband, who claimed the couple had argued about Turner’s excessive drinking, at which time she became angry and attempted to leave with the car keys, reports show.
“Mr. Turner said she was intoxicated and that he tried to convince her not to drive,” officer Cody Jones said. “He stated she scratched his neck just below his right ear, and I observed a small scratch on his neck with blood running down he neck to his shoulder.”
Officers began searching the complex grounds for Turner, who were advised by her husband of her “extensive medical history,” and were eventually able to locate her after she’d been hiding in the nearby woods during the search.
The search included help from Catoosa County sheriff’s deputies, fire personnel, and emergency personnel, reports show.
“Mrs. Turner tested positive for the presence of alcohol, and she was continually laughing about the number of emergency personnel that were on the scene,” Jones said.
During questioning, Turner admitted that she “may have” scratched her husband during the altercation.
After her arrest, police say, Turner’s husband began to change his story of what happened.
“When I left detention, I met with Mr. Turner again and retrieved a written statement,” Jones explained. “After he (Mr. Turner) learned that his wife had been arrested, he recanted his story about her scratching his neck, and said that he didn’t know how he was cut, and stated that he has thin skin.”
