Shalandia Marie Reed

Fort Oglethorpe police had a bizarre encounter with a runaway hospital patient on Thursday night, July 21, after the woman allegedly fought with police in her hospital gown on Old LaFayette Road.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

Shalandia Marie Reed, 27, of Rising Fawn, Ga., was arrested on July 21 on charges of simple battery and obstruction of officers.

Reed remained in Catoosa County jail as of Monday, July 25, with bond set at $7,500.

Officers were dispatched to Cornerstone Hospital at approximately 7:21 p.m. Thursday night in reference to a female patient who’d ran from the hospital after having been brought in by Walker County Sheriff’s deputies.

Reed was spotted roaming behind the Sears Shoe Store on LaFayette Road, and officers caught up with her at the corner of White Street.

Officers say Reed was visibly upset and repeatedly screamed obscenities at the officers, and eventually got physically violent when they tried to take her into custody.

“Ms. Reed continued to struggle and tense up while screaming and yelling obscenities,” officer Tyler Crosby said. “I then held onto her legs, but she was able to wrestle free and kick me twice in the chest.”

After eventually getting Reed handcuffed, she still refused to obey officers, and wouldn’t walk herself back inside the hospital.

Reed was medically cleared by the hospital and subsequently taken to jail.
