Accidental shooting

A 16-year-old Catoosa County teen was accidentally shot and killed Monday night, Aug. 24, by his stepbrother at the family’s house, police say.

The victim, Hunter Harbin, was accidentally shot in the gut by his stepbrother, 17-year-old Austin Dewayne Stapp.

According to Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department captain Chris Lyons, the incident occurred just after 11:20 p.m.

“The call came in at 11:24 p.m. at 385 Edgemond Circle in Ringgold,” Lyons said. “It’s early in the investigation, but the incident appears to be accidental.”

Lyons said the boy was shot with a .38-caliber handgun.

“Other family members were there at the home,” Lyons said. “There doesn’t appear to be any criminal acts at this time. The victim’s body has been sent to the crime lab for autopsy.”

“We’re still in the early stages of the investigation,” Lyons said. “The family is being very cooperative.”
