Fort Oglethorpe Christmas parade 2016

The city of Fort Oglethorpe is expanding its Christmas event this year beyond the usual parade, says city council member and mayor pro tem Paula Stinnett.

"We’re going to have choirs, seasonal music, and activities for kids on the polo field after the parade," says Stinnett. "Santa will be there to hear what children want for Christmas and they can have their picture taken with him." There will also be hot chocolate for sale.

The Fort Oglethorpe Christmas parade has a new route this year. It will no longer run on Battlefield Parkway. It will begin in the Kmart parking lot where it meets Lafayette Road at Maxi Auto and will end on Barnhardt Circle where there will be a family festival.

The city will have a new Christmas tree on the polo field – a Carolina Sapphire that will be planted and decorated for the first time this year. The lighting of the tree will take place during the Dec. 10 festivities.

Christmas at the Post kicks off at 6 p.m. with the parade, which will run this year only on Lafayette Road, from the Kmart parking lot at the corner where it borders Maxi Auto to Barnhardt Circle. The polo field festivities will take place after the parade and will end by 9 p.m.

Those interested in having a float in the parade can find an application on the city website, Church or civic groups interested in doing activities for children or participating in the music can call the Christmas hotline at 706-858-4639.
