This school year, Daley Culberson, a junior in Ridgeland High School’s Honors Academy and member of Georgia State Superintendent's Student Advisory Council, approached Chattanooga Valley Elementary School teachers with the idea of “adopting” community veterans as a service project.
Many teachers were instantly interested in allowing their classes to participate. Students were invited to nominate veterans from their families and the community, whom classes might honor.
Veterans were paired with classes, who wrote letters, made cards, and brought in small gift cards to show appreciation for their honorable service to our nation.
The outpouring of gratitude was an unexpected result, with families participating schoolwide.
“Honoring veterans is a tremendous value to instill in students,” CVE Principal Heather Culberson said. “It is very important to me that our students recognize the sacrifices of veterans and have opportunities to honor them, which is why we were happy to engage in this project.”
On Nov. 18, Daley Culberson mailed 24 packets to veterans in the community, each filled with words of thanks. “I cannot wait for the veterans to receive the care packets that we sent,” Daley said. “I hope that our cards brighten their holidays!”
Dale said she plans to continue and expand the project, with the goal of “connecting students with local veterans.”
