The LaFayette Woman’s Club received state and district awards at the 123rd annual GFWC Georgia State Convention.
First Vice President Ajaye Mashburn earned the White Star Award for recruiting five new members. She was the only state recipient of the award.
The club won a third-place citation at the state level in international outreach for outstanding community service.
The club also won first-place district awards in arts, conservation, education, home life, international outreach and public issues.
A second-place individual state art award went to Kaye Thurman in crochet.
LaFayette Woman’s Club member Carolyn Mize received her 20-year service pin at the luncheon for her commitment to the club. Joyce Gravitt received her 10-year pin for her years of service. Five-year pins were awarded to Coleen Sprayberry, Kaye Thurman and Rachel Willeford.
LaFayette Woman’s Club member Judge Shelia Thompson was awarded the prestigious Club Appreciation Award at the club’s spring luncheon. This award is chosen by the members of the LaFayette Woman’s Club to the woman who has gone above and beyond in her club work.
Club President Rachel Oesch Willeford said Judge Thompson’s years of service to the club is just part of the reason why she was chosen Club Woman of the Year,
“Judge Thompson is dedicated to the club and the community,” Willeford said. “She is always ready to lend a helping hand. This year she was instrumental in navigating the club through legal proceedings. The club is stronger than even thanks to her guidance and expertise.”
Thompson is a member of the Club’s Public Issues Community Service Project. She is a member of the Friends of the LaFayette-Walker County Library, is an active member of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and has even won the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year Award. She is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary with the Gideon’s and is the on the protocol committee for the multidisciplinary investigation and prosecution child abuse, child sexual abuse and child exploitation.
