The scene of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 53, which left one dead and two with injuries.

An accident that occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 21 on Highway 53 in the Sonoraville community resulted in one death and two others injured.

According to Sgt. Kris Hemphill with the Georgia State Patrol, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Christina Becerra, 41, of Rydal, was traveling west on Highway 53 around Sonoraville Pharmacy, when a 2010 Nissan Rogue, driven by Masie Gowens, 72, from Adairsville, pulled onto the highway from the parking lot of the pharmacy, attempting to turn left. Becerra could not stop her vehicle in time, colliding into Gowens’ driver side door.

Gowens was air lifted to Erlanger in Chattanooga, where she succumbed to her injuries.

A passenger in her car, identified as her husband, Harvey Gowens, was transported to Gordon Hospital with upper-extremity injuries.

Becerra was also transported to Gordon Hospital with upper-extremity injuries.

According to Sgt. Hemphill, speed was not a contributing factor to the crash. The investigation is ongoing, but no charges are expected to be filed.
