A Sunday afternoon single-vehicle wreck sent a mom and her son to Floyd Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
Calhoun Police responded to the wreck on State Route 53 Spur at Harris Beam Road, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on June 25, 2017. According to the motor vehicle report, a 2005 Nissan Altima, driven by Joseph D. Soler, 44, of 420 Apison Road, Cohutta Springs, was traveling west on the Spur in the outside lane when, according to Soler, his driver’s side back tire blew out, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, traveling off the roadway into a power pole. Soler told officers that he had put a spare tire on the back driver’s side of his vehicle approximately 15 - 20 minutes prior to the wreck.
A passenger in his car, Debbie Boggs, 33, of a Resaca address and identified as Soler’s girlfriend, told officers that she and Soler had been arguing over the course of the previous few days and just before the wreck told him she did not want to be with him anymore. Boggs told officers that she believed Soler purposefully ran off the road with the intent to harm her.
According to the report, based on tire marks at the scene, officers do not believe the driver’s side back tire blew out until the vehicle was off the roadway.
Boggs and her son, a 10-year-old, were both transported to Floyd Medical Center by Gordon County EMS for unspecified injuries. A 2-year-old passenger and Soler were both unharmed.
There was extensive damage to the vehicle. Soler was charged with failure to maintain lane.
