Two Gordon County locals will play in the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven, Miss., July 16-21. Aubrey Towers and Jacob Cornette are both upcoming freshmen at Sonoraville High School, and they play with the Trion Bulldogs travel team.
Along with their teammates, Towers and Cornette went undefeated to win the 14-under District and State Tournaments. Towers pitched two scoreless innings against Rossville in the District Championship game with three strikeouts. Cornette pitched two strong innings against Summerville during the District Tournament as well.
At the State Tournament held at Sandy Plains Park in Marietta, Towers pitched two scoreless innings against Heard County. He faced seven batters and had three strikeouts. To finish the championship game against Tallapoosa, Cornette pitched four innings and had nine strikeouts. The game was hard-fought, and the Bulldogs were victorious 10-9 to claim the state title.
