The Sonoraville Firebirds wrestling team traveled to Chattanooga on Saturday to compete in the McCallie Invitational and came away with a solid finish against high-level competition.
Sonoraville took sixth overall as a team with 153 total points, improving upon their 16th-place finish last year. The field was made up of 33 teams from Georgia and Tennessee.
Leading the way for the Firebirds was Tyler Hunt and Trevor Burdick, who each finished first in their weight class. Eli Knight earned a third-place finish, and John Knight was fourth.
Sonoraville will next compete at the Calhoun New Year’s Duals on Jan. 30 starting at 9 a.m. at Calhoun High.

Calhoun girls 41, Cartersville 36
The Lady Jacket avenged an earlier loss on Saturday with a gritty home victory over Cartersville in non-region action.
Calhoun (2-3) led 18-14 at half and then 31-22 going into the fourth quarter before holding off a late charge from the Lady Hurricanes, who previously defeated Calhoun on Dec. 2.
Erin Davis led the Calhoun scoring with 13 points, and Railey Greeson was also big with 12, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Lay Jackets were solid from the free throw line as well, going 9-for-16.
Calhoun opened play in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival on Monday against Pepperell. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.)
Coahulla Creek boys 49, Gordon Central 48
The Warriors led for much of the game, but Coahulla Creek outscored them 16-13 in the fourth quarter to pull out a one-point road victory in non-region action.
Gordon Central (0-9) was led by Quan Curtis, who had a huge day with 31 points. The next highest scorer for the Warriors was Christian Marycz with five.
Gordon Central struggled from the free throw line, shooting 12-of-25, which cost them in a close game.
The Warriors have a couple weeks off before getting back on the court on Dec. 28 when they host Murray County in another non-region test at 6:30 p.m.
Model boys 62, Calhoun 53
The Jackets fell behind early and weren’t able to fight all the way back in a non-region road loss on Friday.
Calhoun (1-1) trailed 14-7 after the first quarter and 31-22 at the half. They rallied to within 41-35 after three quarters, but Model closed it out with a 22-18 advantage in the fourth. The Devils also capitalized at the free throw line, shooting 18-of-29 opposed to Calhoun’s 7-of-9 day.
Porter Law had a big offensive night for Calhoun with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Kaylan Aker added 14, and Bralin Barton scored seven.
Calhoun will open play in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Georgia Highlands against the winner of the Cartersville-Pepperell first-round matchup.
Model girls 72, Calhoun 44
It was a tough night from the start for the Lady Jackets as they couldn’t keep pace with a high-powered Model offensive attack on Friday in non-region action.
The Lady Jackets (1-3) dug themselves a big hole early, trailing 21-3 after one quarter and were never able to get back within striking distance.
Railey Greeson was the leading scorer for Calhoun with 14, including a pair of 3s. Erin Davis added nine, and Maggie McBrayer scored eight. Victaria Saxton led Model with 28.
Rockmart boys 51, Gordon Central 37
Despite leading at the half on Friday, Gordon Central struggled in a big way offensively in the third and fourth quarters as the lost a Region 7-AA contest on the road.
The Warriors (0-8, 0-3) jumped out to a 31-23 lead at the half, but they were held to just six points in the final two quarters.
Quan Curtis was the only Gordon Central player to reach double figures with 12 points. Gabe Ross added seven.
