It’s been a tough last two seasons for Gordon Central baseball, going winless in both, but the Warriors started the 2018 season off on a high note with a big road win thanks to some big hits in the final two innings on Friday.
The Warriors scored two runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to defeat Temple 8-5 in a non-region contest and start the season 1-0.
Josh Cronan led Gordon Central with a hit and 3 RBIs at the plate, and Nate Tate added a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jacob Silvers also had a hit and two RBIs, and Zack Sisson came through with a hit and an RBI.
Silvers earned the win on the mound, going six innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit while striking out three. Cronan came in for the save in the seventh and gave up three runs on three hits while striking out one.
Gordon Central is back on the road on Tuesday to visit Christian Heritage for a non-region test at 5:30 p.m. They will host Christian Heritage on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

Calhoun sweeps doubleheader at home against Heritage
The Jackets got a couple strong pitching performances and timely hitting to earn a couple of wins on Saturday in a home doubleheader against Heritage.
Behind a strong outing from Ben King, Calhoun (3-0) pulled out a 2-1 victory in Game 1, and then Brett Potts followed suit in Game 2 by going the distance to lead the way to a 4-2 victory.
King earned the win in Game 1 by pitching six innings and giving up one run (unearned) on one hit while striking out nine. Ethan Crump came in to earn the save by pitching a scoreless seventh, allowing two hits and striking out one. King boosted his effort on the mound by adding two hits at the plate, including a double, and Potts had a hit and an RBI. John Andrew Cash also had a hit and a run scored, and Nate Bonner contributed a hit and a stolen base.
Potts pitched a complete game in Game 2 and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Cash had the big bat in the 13-hit offensive effort for the Jackets as he was 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and a run scored. Carson Kemp had two hits, including a double, and a run scored, and King and Mathew Williams each had two hits apiece. Potts added a hit and an RBI, and Parker McPherson had a hit and a run scored.
Calhoun looked to keep the early-season momentum going on Tuesday when they visited Pepperell for a non-region contest at 4:30 p.m. They are back home on Friday to host another doubleheader, this time against East Hall starting at 5 p.m.
Calhoun girls 4, Southeast Whitfield 0
The Calhoun Lady Jackets got their first win of the season on Thursday thanks to a shutout effort at home against Southeast Whitfield in non-region action.
The Lady Jackets (1-2-1) got two goals from Emily Sorrow and one apiece from Jenna Santori and Hannah Dimeler to defeat the Lady Raiders 4-0.
Calhoun is on the road on Tuesday at Woodland for another non-region test at 5 p.m. They will be back home on Thursday when they host Rome at 7 p.m.
Gordon Central boys 3, Christian Heritage 0
The Warriors had goals from three different players to earn a non-region road win on Thursday.
Scoring for Gordon Central (2-1) was Sergio Hernandez, Wilson Fall and Jonny Rivas.
The Warriors are on the road at Pepperell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They visit Coosa on Monday at 7 p.m.

The Lady Warriors used a late goal to earn their first win of the season on Thursday in non-region action.
Gordon Central (1-2) took a lead in the final minute of the game as Gaby Cardona scored on a penalty kick, which proved to be the game-winner.
The Lady Warriors are on the road at Pepperell on Tuesday at 5 p.m. They visit Coosa on Monday at 5 p.m.
