The Gordon Central boys and girls teams competed at the Region 7-AA Meet at Georgia Highlands on Tuesday, and one team qualified for State while the other fell just short in a highly-competitive team race.

The Gordon Central boys finished third as a team to punch their ticket to Carrollton for the Class AA State Meet. The Warriors finished with a team score of 105 to edge out Rockmart (109) and Dade County (112). Leading the way for the team was Joey Kowalczewski in 12th with a time of 18:33.16. Nelson Rodriguez was close behind in 16th with an 18:55.46.

Completing the boys’ team score was Logan Swaim (24th, 19:33.88), Alfredo Pegueros (26th, 19:37.11) and Bryce Bussert (27th, 19:41.27).

The Gordon Central girls narrowly missed out on a State berth as they finished fifth as a team with a score of 93 behind Coosa (89) in third and Model (90) in fourth. The Lady Warriors’ top finisher was LizBeth Alvarez who took 13th with a time of 22:47.60. Also factoring into the team score was Ana Rodriquez (19th, 23:54.02), Taylor Evans (20th, 24:02.43), Jasmine Velasco (21st, 24:14.88) and Sarai Tituana (26th, 24:33.18).

The Gordon Central boys will now compete in the Class AA Boys State Meet next Saturday in Carrollton starting at 8 a.m.
