Elbert County girls 36, Gordon Central 29
The Lady Warriors battled for four quarters in a low-scoring, competitive affair but came up just a little short in their first-ever state tournament appearance on the road in the first round of the Class AA bracket.
Gordon Central (10-15) fought right with host Elbert County for the first three quarters as each team made their mark on the defensive end. The Lady Warriors trailed 6-3 after one quarter and then 16-13 at the half. They pulled within one at the end of the third at 26-25, but Elbert County put the game away by holding Gordon Central to just four points in the fourth while scoring 10 of their own.
Mercedes Coleman was the lone Gordon Central player to reach double figures with 10 points. Tayla Gunn added seven, and Cara Crump knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to score six points.
Gordon Central coach Matt Swanson said despite the loss he was proud of what his team has done this season as they made program history.
“I’m so proud of my girls,” said Swanson. “What they accomplished the last couple weeks is amazing.”
The Lady Warriors will lose four seniors, including Bailey Ferguson, Olivia Fleming, Leslie Gutierrez and JaBresha Evans, but they return a strong core from this year’s group.
Coleman closed out a stellar freshman season with her 10-point effort on Saturday, and Crump will be back next season after coming on strong toward the end of the schedule this year after recovering from a knee injury that cost her much of the first half of the season.
