Gordon Central High senior Brent Silvar (seated, center) signed a football scholarship with Shorter University (Rome, Ga.) on Wednesday.

Silvar said of the signing: “It’s crazy to see all the hard work over the past few years finally pay of with something big like this. I’ve been playing or working on football almost non-stop for so many years now, and for that to pay off with me getting a chance to play Division II football is huge. I’m just thankful for everyone that has helped me...the coaches that I’ve played for and my family for supporting me and believing in me. This day was amazing. On my visit to Shorter, I got to know the new coaching staff, and they are going through their own culture change like we have at Gordon Central this past year. I love the new coach’s message, and they made me feel wanted there. Shorter is a good family environment and a Christian school which is big being a believer myself. They have mandatory chapel every week, and that’s not something every college pays attention to. It’s a great school, and it’s close to my family so that was a big aspect of my decision as well. Right now, I’m sitting back soaking everything in because you only get to go to high school once. But I’m going to hit the weight room hard to get ready for college ball. This is a huge opportunity for me, and I don’t want to let anyone down. Everyone has put a lot of time in with me, and I am going to do all I can do to show them it was worth it.”

Also attending the signing were: (front row, from left) mother Teri-Ann Silvar, father Mitchell Silvar, (back row, from left) Gordon Central assistant athletic director Derrick Broom, Gordon Central athletic director Matt Swanson, assistant coach TJ Hamilton, assistant coach Tyshaun Clemmons, assistant coach Blake Hilley, assistant coach Matt Williams, head coach Cory Nix, assistant coach Michael Hill, assistant coach Brandon Grubbs and assistant coach John Rainwater.
