A Fall Kick-off Festival for Relay for Life of Gordon County is scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 7 from 7 - 10 p.m. at Payne Farms, located at 204 Salem Road in Calhoun, near the airport.
The event was organized to kick off the 2018 Relay for Life season; it is being used as an introduction for this year’s Relay event and will be used to show attendees how the public can get involved in the annual fundraiser.
“Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s local fundraising event,” said Event Lead Cassandra Parker. “Each year, communities across the country join together and raise money for the fight against cancer and we are proud to be one of them. The money raised goes to fund research of new drugs and treatments, as well as the programs that the American Cancer Society provides to cancer patients right here in Gordon County, such as the Look Good Feel Better program.”
The fundraiser runs for the majority of the year, with many smaller fundraisers leading up to the big event in the month of May.
“The Relay season runs from October to August,” said Parker. “This year’s Relay event will be held on May 4, 2018.”
Parker said that this weekend’s free event is family-friendly. There will be a petting zoo, jump pad, corn pits and tractor rides. Attendees can also bring their lawn chairs for an outdoor movie, “Hotel Transylvania,” which will begin at 8:15 p.m.
“Payne Farms has been so kind to allow us to have our kickoff at their venue and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Parker. “It’s going to be a fun time for families to come together, enjoy the beautiful fall weather we’re having and learn about how to get involved in Relay. And it’s FREE, who doesn’t love an event that is free? We are so excited to kickoff this new season and share some of the changes we’ll be making this year”
