A Recognition Reception to honor Calhoun City Schools' Board Member Alvin Long will be held on Monday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Calhoun High School Media / College and Career Center.
Long is a Gordon County native who began his funeral service career in 1969. He is a graduate of Calhoun High School and the Gupton - Jones College of Mortuary Science. He became a Licensed Embalmer in 1976 and a Licensed Funeral Director in 1977, and is National Board Certified. Long is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Department of Ophthalmology Post-Mortem Eye Enucleation Course, and is a Member of the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia.
In addition to his funeral service career, he served as Chairman of the Gordon County Board of Commissioners for 12 years, and has been a member of several board of directors such as the Calhoun/Gordon County Library Board, the Gordon County Board of Health, the Gordon Hospital Foundation Board, the Board of Directors of the Gordon County Historical Society, the Historical Preservation Commission and has served on several Chamber of Commerce committees. He is also a member of the Sonoraville Masonic Lodge.
Long has been a valued and respected member of the staff of Thomas Funeral Home since 1991. He is married to the former Miss Patricia Hammontree and has two daughters and several grandchildren. They attend Trinity Baptist Church.
Long served as a member of the Calhoun City Schools' Board of Education from 2014-2017. "We will miss Alvin's experience and leadership on our Board. He is truly a servant leader who seeks what is best for Calhoun - Gordon County. We wish him the absolute best and know that he will continue to serve his community in some capacity," said Eddie Reeves, Board Chair.
