Avanelle Daves

Avanelle Baxter Daves, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017. She was born on July 5, 1918 to John and Molly Baxter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Bobbie Jean Baxter; her brothers, Grady and E.J. Baxter; her husband, Fred Daves, Jr; and son-in-law, Tommy Brown, Jr.

Avanelle is survived by children, Joan Daves Brown of Calhoun, George Daves and his wife, Sue, of Maryland and Mary Ellen Daves McCall of Dallas, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jeff Brown and his wife, Polly, of Calhoun, Rick Brown and his wife, Laurie, of Calhoun, Dana Gay and her husband, Tommy, of Gainesville, Ga., Jamie Daves, and Jonathan Daves both of Los Angeles, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren, Emily Brown Didrick and her husband, Jarrett, of Atlanta, Mallory Brown of Atlanta, Molly Gay of Nashville, Tenn., Katie Gay of Athens, and Thomas Gay of Gainesville, Tegan McEntire of Athens, Sydney McEntire of Calhoun; a brother, Billy Baxter and his wife, Kay, of Calhoun; nieces Becky Baxter Paris and her husband, Robert, of Calhoun, Beth Baxter Defoor of Calhoun, Jane Baxter Bowyer and her husband, Ralph, of Savannah.

She will be remembered as a caring person and for her love of family and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at 3 p.m.

The family received friends on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 from 2 p.m. until the funeral hour of 3 p.m. Active pallbearers were Andrew Tierce, Joel Ostuw, Jeff Brown, Rick Brown, Tommy Gay, Thomas Gay, Jamie Daves, Jonathan Daves, and Jarrett Didrick. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Lay, Jerry Brumlow, Eddie Fair, Shannon Bennett, Billy Baxter, Will Ostuw, Robert Paris, Bob Linn, and members of the Mattie Lou Strain Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church.

Eddy Dukes

Mr. Eddy Dukes, age 55, of the Plainville community, passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 24 in Erlanger Hospital.

Eddy was born Aug. 20, 1962 in Tifton, Georgia, son of the late Primus Elwood Dukes and Martha Renfroe Dukes. He was a 10 year veteran of the United States Air Force serving during “Desert Storm.” Eddy was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Plainville where he had lived for the past 12 years. At the time of his death he was employed by Cobb Industrial Fabricators as a welder. He enjoyed football and was a well-known farrier.

Survivors include his wife, Danita Dukes of Plainville; two sons, William Bailey of Lake Charles, La. and Aaron Floyd of Plainville; three daughters, Nikki Duhan of Lake Charles, La., Lesley Warnke of Raleigh, N.C. and Nicole Black of Plainville; one brother, Jay Dukes of Savannah; two sisters, Angie Breland of LaGrange and Lisa Bailey of Savannah. Ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Rev. David Ray and Rev. Ron Bankson officiating. Interment followed in the Scott Cemetery. Ailene Dyer and Amber Lee will have charge of the music.

Pallbearers serving were Hub Bailey, Joey Isakson, Mike Bailey, Seth Cochran, Ken Pope, William Bailey, and Danny Bennett.

Gary Eaton

Mr. Gary Clifton Eaton, age 76, of Calhoun, and formerly of McGraw, New York, departed this life Monday evening, Oct. 23, 2017 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born Aug. 13, 1941 in Marathon, New York, a son of the late Wendell Martin and Roberta Mae Parker Eaton. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of forty-eight years, Linda Beth Winfield Eaton and a great-granddaughter, Ella Grace Cochran. Gary was a 1960 graduate of McGraw High School in McGraw, New York. Gary proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from the Dixie Group where he was a truck driver.

He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Eaton Achord; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Tina Eaton, Todd and Christine Eaton all of Calhoun, and Jeffrey and Virginia Eaton of Plainville; grandchildren, Brittany and Corey Cochran, Brandon Eaton, Blake and Kim Eaton, Bryant and Blanca Eaton, Garren Achord, Kyle Eaton, Isabella Eaton, Cameron Burchett, Ashley Cudd, Tabitha Breeding, Tyler Luck, Amber Smith and Christine Erwin; fourteen great-grandchildren; brother, Brian and Elaine Eaton; sister, Martha Hooper all of Calhoun, GA; several nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Gary Clifton Eaton were held Friday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Ponders Calhoun Chapel with Reverend Jason Parker and Larry Winfield officiating. Entombment followed at the Haven of Rest Memorial Park with Paul Hooper, Neal Hooper, Garren Achord, Brandon Eaton, Blake Eaton, Bryant Eaton and Corey Cochran serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Kyle Eaton, Christan Eaton, Branson Cochran, Keaton Achord, and Brantley Achord. Military crypt side honors were provided by the Dalton American Legion Post #112.

The family received friends at Ponders Calhoun Chapel from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 12 p.m. noon Friday until the service hour.

Travene Strickland

Mrs. Travene Owens Strickland, age 71, lifelong resident of Calhoun, died Saturday morning, Oct. 28, 2017. She was born on Nov. 19, 1945, daughter of the late Travis and Montene Garren Owens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gary C. Owens and grandson, Joey Cooper. She graduated from Calhoun High School and Rome Beauty School. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Jerry M. Strickland; her daughter, Angelina Cooper; her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Vicki Strickland; her granddaughter, Lauren Strickland; her sister, Lawanda Ralston; nephews and a niece.

Service to honor the life of Mrs. Travene Owens Strickland was held Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. from the Belmont Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Williams and Dr. John Allen officiating. Interment followed in the Chandler Cemetery with Glen Tendall, Tony Erwin, Larry Dempsey, Alfred Knight, Stephen Ralston and Edwin Ralston serving as pallbearers. The Sportsman Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers. The family received friends at the church from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.

PeJoe Turner

Mr. Robert Artie “PeJoe” Turner, age 74, of the Hill City Community in Gordon County, departed this life on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 in the comfort of his home. PeJoe was born July 9, 1943 in Dalton, a son of the late, Farris Mae Turner Watson and Hubert Turner. He was also preceded in death by a son, Reed Turner, and brothers, Howard “Mac” Turner and William “Bill” Watson. PeJoe was retired from Cornet Carpet. He was a member of Hill City Baptist Church, the Democratic Party and very active with the Baptist Builders of Christ, having gone on many mission trips over the years. PeJoe was a very loyal friend, hard worker, loved the outdoors and spending time at his farm, but the true love of his life was his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Priest Turner of the residence and celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary on Aug. 8, 2017; daughter, Tammy Turner Thornton and her fiancée, Dusty Norrell of Calhoun; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Melinda Lovingood Turner of Calhoun, Andy Turner of Hill City, Rita Turner of Chatsworth; grandchildren, Constance Turner of Cartersville, Matthew Turner of Brooklyn, N.Y., India Thornton Waller and Bobby Waller of Hill City, Mitchell and Casey Turner of Thornton, Colo., PVT2, Nathan Thornton of Fort Gordon, Ga., Brett and Guilda Turner, Walt and Katelyn Sheriff Turner, Bryceson Turner, Garett Turner, Kelly and Thy Johnston, Cassidy and Jazz Gregoire all of Calhoun, Amber Westmoreland of Rocky Face, John Gravitte of Chicago, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane Turner and Buddy Hughes, Jennifer Watson Tarvin all of Dalton, Janet Watson Medlin of Calhoun; sister-in-law, Linda Turner of Hill City; special friends, Cindy Jones and Paige Gordy with Hearth Hospice; several nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Robert A. “PeJoe” Turner were held Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017 at 1 p.m. the Hill City Baptist Church with Reverend Woody Woodfin and Reverend Barry Brock officiating. He was laid to rest beside his son in the church cemetery with Ethan Watson in charge of graveside rites. His grandsons and Bill Norrell served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the men of Hill City Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hill City Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

The family received friends at the Hill City Baptist Church on Sunday morning, Oct. 29, 2017 after 10 a.m. until the service hour.
