Barney Lovett, 61, of Hunts Rd., Calhoun died from blunt force trauma to the head yesterday in a two car collision, according to Deputy Coroner Joey Peace.
The crash temporarily closed down U.S. 41 Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 8, at the intersection of Mauldin Road in Calhoun.
According to Calhoun City Police Lt. Tony Pyle, a Calhoun City Police officer witnessed a Toyota Camry driving South on U.S. 41, in the middle turn lane at a high rate of speed.
According to Pyle, the officer pulled into the Painted Post parking lot to turn around and follow the vehicle when he reportedly heard the collision.
The car crashed into a white SUV that was turning left off of Mauldin Road heading north on U.S. 41. Lovett, who was driving the Camry, died at the scene.
The driver of the SUV was taken to Gordon Hospital and treated for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries at the time.
